Greens force release of new desalination documents

Expert plans show water recycling could work

Greens moves in the Upper House have forced the Government to release previously secret documents relating to the proposed desalination plant.

In response to a formal request from Greens MLC Ian Cohen, former Supreme Court judge Terry Cole QC has ordered the release of six boxes of documents the Government had sought to suppress.

“It is no wonder the Government wanted these documents kept secret. They show recycling is a real option,” Mr Cohen said.

“A proposal by AGL to use its disused pipes network to move recycled water for industrial purposes is evidence that there are much better alternatives to desalination.

“The people of Sydney are keen to do their bit to conserve and recycle water but they are being let down by their Government.

“It is time for an urgent re-think on the Kurnell desalination plant before it is imposed - not just on current residents - but future generations as well,” Mr Cohen said.
